How to Determine Your Eligibility for Social Security Disability Benefits
Before applying for Social Security disability benefits, you must first establish whether you are eligible to claim such benefits.
To be eligible for SSD benefits, you must:
- Currently be under the national retirement age of 66.
- Have been employed long/ recently enough in a position covered by Social Security.
- Have a qualifying disability, as defined by the SSA.
- Have a disability that is expected to last at least one year or result in death.
- Have the required work credits for your age.
- Have paid FICA taxes for five of the last 10 years.
